I just got back from an overcrowded fitness class, so forgive me if I have a bit of the “cranky pants-itis”, but it appears people have no clue about fitness class etiquette!! There are several unwritten rules that should be followed when participating in a group fitness class. Intolerably, tonight every one of those unwritten rules were broken. Let it be known, I am now officially writing them down and submitting them to be part of the constitution.
Here are the common and well known rules to fitness classes:
Stay Hydrated. Drink lots of water.
Let the instructor know if you have any injuries or your new to the workout so that modifications can be provided.
Wear appropriate workout clothes.
Save the chit chat for later.
Make sure cell phones are off or set to vibrate.
Here are the NEW rules
Be on time!
- Most people who are regulars to fitness classes get there on time or earlier to ensure a good or preferred spot in the class. Don’t punish me if you’re late and the class is up to capacity. Just because you’re late and can’t find a space doesn’t mean it’s okay for you to invade mine. I got here early to get this spot and apparently now it doesn’t matter cause you’re all up in my grill.
The arms length rule
- If we can hold hands and embrace, you’re too close to me. It’s unsafe and awkward to exercise in such close proximity. And lets keep it real, neither one of us is getting the most out of our class if we are able to get to second base.
Don’t be a blocker
- In fitness it’s not considered narcissistic to want to stare at yourself in the mirror. The mirrors are there so you can focus on your form to ensure you’re doing the exercises correctly. Don’t stand directly in front of someone and block the mirror. It’s just rude and inconsiderate. Plus, I just really like to stare at myself.
Leave the front row for the pros
- Most people rely on those in the front if they can’t see the instructor. If you’re in the front and don’t know what your doing, neither will those behind you.
No one likes a show off!
- Keep the pace with the instructor and don’t go ahead. It confuses the newbies.
We all want to get the most out of our workout. Follow these simple rules and everyone will leave a happy exerciser!
