Essential Oils 101: Lavender

lavender essential oil young livingIt’s no secret how much I love my essential oils. Recently, I’ve gotten many requests to talk about my favorite oils and the oils I use daily. I think Essential Oils are a really awesome way of helping keeping you happy and healthy. Over a series of blogs, I’ll talk about my faves and why you should include it in your collection. I’ll break down how I use them and their benefits.

If you’re looking to start your Essential Oils arsenal bag, Lavender is an absolute must have. Lavender is pretty much like the Swiss Army knife of Essential Oils. Here’s why:

Way, way back in the day, a **French Scientist Rene Gattefosse, discovered lavender’s amazing ability to promote tissue regeneration and speed up the wound healing process, when he suffered a severe burn while working in his lab. He rubbed a bit of lavender oil onto the wound, and bam, it healed stat. Lavender is really so amazing for the skin. Because of it’s anitbacterial properties, it’s been shown to help heal and/or soothe skin conditions such as eczema and clear acne! Got a blemish? No problem. Lavender’s got your back. A drop of lavender directly on the pimple will help get rid of the nasty blemish. As a long time sufferer of acne and stupid adult acne, whenever I feel the first sign of a breakout, I rub a few drops of lavender into my hand, rub it around, then rub it directly onto the zit. Within a few days, it’s gone. I even use it for those horrible cystic pimples. Those nasty things hurt and take forever to go away. When I use lavender to those jerks, it heals much quicker. With changing my diet and using oils to my face, I’ve been able to control my acne. There’s been a major difference in my breakouts. I’m not going to say it’s oils alone, because I mostly use them when I breakout. Changing my diet to a more clean foods I believe is key! Okay, back to oils…My teacher puts in on scrapes, burns, bee stings. She says it’s the ultimate skin healer. As of now, I’ve only used it on blemishes, but if the time comes when I have the need, I’ll be using lavender as a line of skin defense!

When my husband won a Podcast award, one of the conditions upon his win was to shave his head. Of course I was thrilled he won, unfortunately he’s way hotter with a full head of his beautiful locks. Twice a day I made him rub 3 drops of lavender oil to his head to promote hair growth. Let’s just say his hair is back and better than ever!

Babies love it, too. It’s kind of crazy how much my son loves lavender. Ever since he was a few months old, after a bath, I place a few drops on my hand, rub it, then cup my hands over his nose. He grabs onto my hands and takes in deep breaths enjoying the scent. Sometimes he even giggles at the aroma. I take the remainder and rub some on his chest and on his temples. I used to put it in his bath water, but I stopped because I was nervous he was going to get it in his eyes. Essential Oils burn like hell when you get them in your eyes, so at all costs be careful!

Lavender is the ultimate chill pill. Stressed and need to relax? Can’t sleep? Annoyed? No need to pop a Xanax. Place a few drops of Lavender onto the palm of your hand and gently rub, then cup your hands over your nose. I swear, almost instantly your body relaxes. You can feel the muscles release just by inhaling it. **At the University of Miami, researchers discovered that inhaling Lavender increased beta waves in the brain. In english, it means it promoted relaxation. It also reduced depression and improved Cognitive performance. It makes you smarter, too!

My favorite is diffusing lavender before bedtime. My best night’s sleep is when I’m inhaling lavender through the diffuser. Just three drops into the diffuser with water is enough to last a few hours of inhaled relaxation. If you ever are in need of a good night’s rest, I highly recommend diffusing Lavender. Also really good after a long day at work or a super stressful day and you just feel like choking someone. Before you grab onto someone’s neck, grab some lavender. You’ll totally thank me for it.
