In order to build a yoga practice, consistency is key. This doesn’t mean that you have to pay about $20 a day for a yoga class. You can help build your practice in the privacy of your own home. Sometimes you’re short on time and having an at home yoga practice helps you stay dedicated and consistent. Here are the must haves of building your own private yoga studio.
Yoga Mat
A good yoga mat is key to any yoga practice. If your serious about your practice I highly suggest buying a good mat. A good mat will last you years and not fall apart. I’ve bought dozens of cheap mats because I didn’t want to dig deep into my pockets. I actually spent more money on several cheap mats than I would of had I just bought a good one. Learn from my mistakes and buy a good one. My favorite is the Jade yoga mat.
Yoga Blocks
Blocks provide stability and support to those challenging poses. Some yogis think using blocks is a sign of weakness. I believe it’s a sign of strength in knowing your limits. Blocks provide the support you need to get into and out of poses safely and without injury!
One block is okay, but I suggest buying two.
Yoga Straps
Straps are amazing in helping your flexibility. They take the stretches up a notch by getting you into the stretch or a pose you would normally be unable to do. They are safe and very effective!
Follow The Leader
If you’re a teacher or seasoned student, building your own yoga sequence is not a problem. But if you’re a newbie, you want to play it safe and follow along with a pro. There are so many yoga DVDs on the market, but the problem is you’re stuck with the same sequences over and over again. If you’re like me, you get bored of this easily and want a challenge. Without even leaving you’re home you can take classes by the most amazing yoga instructors on the planet. From $10-15 a month, you can purchase a subscription to YogaGlo.com or YogaVibes.com. They have the best instructors to lead you through your yoga practice at your schedule. They offer beginner to advanced classes to keep you learning and challenged. If you’re not ready to invest in a subscription YogaSpot.com offers FREE classes (beginner thru advanced) by the amazing Jenny Kaufman.
To build a successful home yoga practice, it’s not just about the supplies and physical tools. You need to create a space in your home that’s dedicated to your practice. Find somewhere that’s free of distractions and roomy enough where you won’t get hurt. If you’re going to practice inversions like a headstand or handstand, make sure there is a free wall nearby you can use for support. Keep your space free from clutter for safety. Most of all, have fun and breathe!
